The Singapore Flyer is a giant Observation wheel which started operations on 11 February 2008, and if you can remember, it was officially opened to the public on 1 March 2008. The grand opening, graced by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong was held on 15 April 2008.

Reaching 42 stories high, the Flyer comprises a 150m diameter wheel, built over a three-story terminal building, giving it a total height of 165m.

Do you know that our Singapore Flyer exceeds the Star of Nanchang (China) by 5m and The London Eye (Britain) by 30m?

Each of the 28 air-conditioned capsules is capable of holding 28 passengers, and a complete rotation of the wheel takes approximately 30 minutes. Located on the southeast tip of the Marina Centre reclaimed land, it offers a paranomic view of the Singapore city skyline and beyond to about 45 km, including the Indonesian islands of Batam and Bintan, as well as Johor, Malaysia.

————————-

Yes, the very latest downtown icon is Marina Barrage!!!!!!!

The Marina Barrage is a dam in Singapore built across the Marina Channel between the reclaimed lands of Marina East and Marina South. turns Marina Bay and Kallang Basin into a new downtown freshwater Marina Reservoir. It provides water supply, flood control and a new lifestyle attraction. This structure will provide flood control by changing the tide flow into the barrage.

Do you know that this S$226 million project requires the relocation of Clifford Pier? It has to be moved from Collyer Quay to Marina South.

Marina Barrage is now Singapore’s 15th reservoir, and the first in the heart of the city. With a catchment area of 10,000 hectares, or one-sixth the size of Singapore, the Marina catchment is the island’s largest and most urbanised catchment. Together with two other new reservoirs, the Marina Reservoir will boost Singapore’s water catchment from half to two-third’s of the country’s land area. It was officially opened on 1 November 2008.

Want to hit 2 birds with 1 stone – a tour of these 2 attractions this December holidays? Hehehe..wait no more.. here comes your chance!!!!

Ms Lo Hwei Yen – Our fellow Singaporean, a victim under Mumbai terrorist attack

Last week, it was a black Friday for Singapore.

In the late evening of Friday 28 November 2008, Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement saying that 28-year-old Singaporean lawyer Ms Lo Hwei Yen, of whom has been held hostage in Oberoi hotel, has been killed.

She is unfortunately the first Singaporean victim of a terror attack. From now on, Singaporeans can no longer regard this as something that “happens only to other countries”.

The Mumbai terror attack which started last Wednesday has killed some 130 people, mainly tourists.

We, members of Nee Soon Central CC YEC feels that the loss of any life to terrorism is sad and tragic, and the loss of a fellow Singaporean is a pain even more keenly and closely felt by each and every Singaporean. All of us.

We agree with what Professor S Jayakumar has said – terrorism is a threat that spares no one, and this tragic event underscores the imperative for all Singaporeans to be constantly vigilant, and the need for the international community to band together to combat this threat.

While feeling sad and shocked about Ms Lo’s death, we also deeply condemn the senseless acts of the terrorists, which has harmed many innocent lives, and caused agony and sufferings to their living loved ones.

Our sincere condolences to Ms Lo’s family members and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. The nation grieves with them.

lo-hwei-yen1

Ms Lo, please rest in peace.

Golf Introductory Clinic – Cont’d

Posted 26/06/2008 by nscyec
Categories: Completed events

Although there was a heavy downpour the night before, participants who have signed up still turned up in full force in the morning for the golf introductory clinic. Why? Because they were eager to understand and learn the golf basics! That reason alone is worthy enough to give them a salutation. Haha.

All participants have had learnt the golf basics and gained a better understanding of this executive sports, which has now increasingly getting a foothold in primary schools, secondary schools and other tertiary institutions in Singapore.

Yeah, golf is now no longer a sports activity meant for the elite, as in the olden days. It is one of the few sports in which a 4-tier family can participate and spend time together today! =)

Fathers’ Day Movie Night – Cont’d

Posted 17/06/2008 by nscyec
Categories: Completed events

Our first attempt at holding an open-air movie screening for Fathers’ Day at Nee Soon Central district last Sunday night was quite a success. Thanks to the trade fair held, there was some human traffic flow.

Most people who came to our movie screening were small size families. On top of people who sat on the chairs provided, there were some crowd gathering around at the courtyard area, watching the movie as well.

We adjusted the pricing of selling our popcorn/candy floss/mineral water bottles accordingly on the spot after knowing the prices of the same items selling at the nearby trade fair.

The candy floss and popcorns sold by us has proven to be quite a hit with the kids.

The story of the chosen movie “Ratatouille” revolves round a rat named Remy, who dreams of doing something different. He wants to become a great chef despite his father’s objections.

A natural-born connoisseur, Remy bears the talent and a keen sense of smell that enables him to whip up delectable dishes easily. However his father constantly reminds him of his place as a rodent, thus Remy finds himself tottering between stretching his imagination to fulfill his dream or resign himself to fate as a pilfering pest.

But as fate would have it, Remy lands himself in Paris, where he finds himself at a restaurant owned by Chef Gusteau, a famous culinary celebrity. A series of bizarre incidents leads to Remy teaming up with Linguini, a never-do-well employee of the restaurant, and together they manage to whip up delicious food that is so palatable it brings tears to a critic’s eyes.

We have chosen this movie to be screened for our Father’s Day Movie Night because it is a big-hearted story that spins a tale of hope and humility. The CGI effects are so cool that it creates a beautiful cityscape of the French capital and transforming rats into adorable creatures. Haha!

We hope everyone have enjoyed themselves at the movie screening last Sunday night.

YEC members such as Alan, Kelvin, Bernard, Xuehuan, Grace, Joyce, May, Chengze, Douglas and Nicholas turned up at the above event.
